Ryanair, one of the original low-cost airlines, has announced that it is creating more than 1,000 new jobs as part of its expansion plans for 2012.

The airline is planning to increase its fleet from 270 to 305 aircraft to serve the new destinations it announced at the end of last year.

Ryanair has said it expects passenger numbers across its network to increase to 80 million this year, up from 75 million in 2011.

It is, therefore, recruiting in several areas of the company, creating jobs for pilots, cabin crew, engineers, and sales/marketing staff.

Ryanair already has a workforce of around 8,000 staff, and will be boosting this by almost 10% over the course of 2012.

“Ryanair looks forward to another strong year of fleet and traffic growth in 2012 and we are proud to create over 1,000 new jobs in Europe,” said Ryanair’s Stephen McNamara.

“Ryanair’s unmatched lowest fares, and no fuel surcharge guarantee continue to make Ryanair the world’s favourite airline.”

2012 is set to be a big year for Ryanair, with five new European bases to open during the year. These include Manchester, Billund, Wroclaw and Palma.

Ryanair has come under fire for its hidden charges and controversial announcements in the past, and last year launched its own prepaid credit card.

Customers who used this card when paying for flights can avoid the airline’s £6 admin fee while also benefitting from other features of the card.

“Ryanair’s £6 admin fee will not apply to any bookings made with the Ryanair Cash Passport,” added Mr. McNamara.

“And there are no transaction charges for using the card at UK merchants until 31st March 2012, so we recommend that UK passengers make the switch to the Ryanair Cash Passport as soon as possible to take advantage of the no fee offer.”
