Currency rules

The Currency

Cuban Peso (CUP)

The Cuban Peso (CUP) or as it’s sometimes referred to in Cuba the ‘national peso’ is one of two official currencies widely accepted in Cuba. The alternative is the ‘convertible peso’ which is also divided into 100 centavos.

If you’re moving/travelling to Cuba be sure differentiate between the two as the term “peso/s” can easily be misconstrued and the Cuban convertible peso is twenty five times more valuble than the ‘national peso’!

Currency Export regulations:

Foreign currencies: only if permit is granted from the "Banco Nacional" (National Bank).

NON-RESIDENTS: Local currency (Cuban Peso-CUP): prohibited.

Foreign currencies: up to the amounts imported and declared upon arrival.

Currency Import regulations:

Foreign currencies: unlimited, provided amounts exceeding USD 5,000.- are declared upon arrival. All traveller's cheques are accepted in freely convertible currencies, except those issued by American Express.
